Teaching methods and learning activities

Exposition by the lecturers. The course slides will be available to support the students in their study and work. Exercise sheets will also be available to students, as well as a list of recommended exercises which will tentatively be covered in the practical sessions. The latter will be available in advance, thus encouraging students to prepare for the class. Other materials will be accessible to students, such as quizzes and exams from previous years, solutions and resolutions.

The teachers involved in the class will have regular office hours to help the students and will be available to discuss the students’ performance in quizzes and in class. This should help the students to assess their progress and to promote a timely intervention in case of poor performance.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Calculation formula of final grade

1- TESTS

There will be two tests, each scored on a 0-10 range. These will take place on the following dates:

1st test: 3 Abril 2013, during lecture
2nd test: 3 June 2013, during lecture

2- EXEMPTION FROM TAKING A FINAL EXAM

-A student will be exempt from taking the normal period exam if and only if the sum of his/her scores on the two tests is greater than or equal to 9.5 (out of 20).

-The student's scores on the tests or on any part of the normal period exam cannot be used on the non-normal period exam ("exame de recurso").

-For a student who completes and hands in the normal period exam, the final grade will be entirely and uniquely dependent on the exam grade, even if he was exempt from taking this exam. In particular, such a student may fail the class, regardless of performance on the tests.

3 - FINAL EXAMS

-Any student is admitted to take a final exam, in the normal and in the non-normal ("recurso") periods.

4 - COMPLEMENTARY EXAM

-Students who obtain a score above 17.5 on an exam or as the sum of their test results might be required to take a complementary exam in order to attain a final grade greater than 17 (out of 20).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Special exams will consist of a written test, which might be preceded by an eliminatory oral test to assess whether the student satisfies minimum requirements to tentatively pass the written test.

Observations

Any student may be required to take an oral examination should there be any doubts concerning his/her performance on certain assessment pieces.
