Botanic Garden

DESCRIPTION

The Botanic Garden of Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto (FCUP) was founded in 1949 after the acquisition by the Portuguese Government of a family farm at the periphery of the city. The farm included a house built in the second half of the nineteenth century, surrounded by gardens and farmland. Nowadays the Jardim Botânico is well inside the city. The original gardens were maintained and expanded, and agricultural land and forest were transformed into wooded park.
The Botanic Garden actually comprises:
  • Historic garden, with a monumentality that results first from the action of the Andresen family and later, after the installation of the Garden, from the vision and initiatives of the German landscape architect Franz Koepp and the engineer forester Renato Dantas Barreto
  • Areas of lakes with aquatic plants
  • Area of park, with an important collection of Gimnospermics and trees such as beeches, oaks, tulips and magnolias
  • A garden of succulents;
  • An area of greenhouses with tropical plants, subtropical, orchids and succulents
In recent years the buildings of the Botanic Garden were rehabilitated, in particular the Andresen House where a deep intervention occurred to prepare this space to host the exhibition “The Darwin Evolution”. In the context of the process of reorganization of the operational frame of the FCUP dependent establishments, nowadays the Botanic Garden is a component of the Museum of Natural History of University of Porto.
