The Master’s of Science in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution provide advanced training for First Cycle Degree holders in Biology, Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine or other related degrees for those students who wish to obtain a Postgraduate degree in the area of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biologyor or who wish to improve their knowledge aiming at applying it in nature conservation issues.

All levels of organisation will be studied from the gene and genome level to that of populations and ecosystems. The programme intends to provide advanced training in the use of new analytical methods and new technologies, particularly in the application of geographic information systems and techniques of molecular and populational genetics.

Admissions Requirements

  • To hold a degree in Biology or related areas;
  • To hold a foreign academic degree in the field of Biology or related areas;
  • To have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the scientific committee of the Course recognizes as sufficient to attest to the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies. For candidates who do not hold the degree at the time of application, but are able to complete it by the date of enrollment in the study cycle, evidence must be made of the marking average at the application date, as well as of the missing curricular units for the degree.
  • Other graduates may be admitted as long as their curriculum demonstrates an adequate basic scientific preparation.
Note: All candidates who do not certify that they have completed their undergraduate degree by the end of the enrollment period will be excluded

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

  • serializedCandidates who hold a bachelor's degree by the time of the selection phase will be ranked first.
  • Ranking will be done according to the following criteria and sub-criteria:

    Academic curriculum (80%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: training area (10%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: final grade average of the degree weighted by the number of credits obtained at the time of application (70%)
   Scientific curriculum and professional experience (20%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: publications in scientific journals (10%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: participation in research projects or participation in undergraduate internships inFor c the area of the study cycle (10%)
  • Candidates who do not yet hold a finished bachelor's degree by the time of the application or those that have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that attests their capacity to carry out this cycle of studies, will be ranked according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final grade average by the weighted average of the grades of individual curricular units obtained.


The Master in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution fits on the domain of biological Sciences. This Master is oriented
towards the understanding of the biological processes in an evolutionary perspective, and the application of this
knowledge on the management and conservation of biological diversity.

In particular, students should acquire/develop a solid knowledge in the following areas:
  • methods for analysing genetic data, either at molecular or populational levels
  • analysis and modelling of distribution patterns of biological diversity
  • handling biological databases, in particular those of molecular data
  • computational and statistical methods for molecular and ecological data analysis
  • implementation of plans for the management and conservation of biological diversity
  • oral and written skills for the presentation, application and dissemination of scientific or technical results

Professional Abilities

The Master course is structured to allow a deeper understanding of biological processes in an evolutionary
perspective, and how this knowledge should be applied in the management and conservation of biological diversity. The main goal of this course is to provide students with a solid academic training in those areas where biology has advanced more in the last decades, such as ecological modelling, molecular genetics, genomics, and its applications, primarily through the use of innovative techniques, and new analytical and computational processes. This course also aim that students develop skills in oral and written presentation, application and dissemination of scientific results, based on sound and updated scientific knowledge. To achieve these objectives, the course is based on a teaching/learning strategy strongly rooted in the practices of a very dynamic, international, and multidisciplinary research group. The most direct measure (though not the sole one) of the degree of compliance to the aforementioned goals of the Master is through the accounting of scientific papers resulting from the work of the students and that are, in most cases, integrated into their Master theses.
