Professional Abilities

Students completing this degree will acquire basic principles and skills in programming, information systems, systems and network management and web technologies as well as the ability to develop, alone or as part of a team, computer applications of a certain dimension, knowing how to make the appropriate choice of algorithms, languages, libraries and user interfaces.

Employment Prospects

The degree in its current form has evolved from its beginnings as the first, scientifically grounded university degree in this area and which has been operational since academic year 1985/86. Since then, many of the students holding degrees from FCUP have gone on to successful careers in Portugal and abroad, whether in companies or IT departments of private and public sector institutions, in industries such as banking, insurance, transport, electricity and telecommunications or in universities or research institutes. The ease of integration of multidisciplinary competencies facilitates the effective adaptation to professional challenges in the business or academic context. For this reason, graduates are quickly absorbed by the job market, and have also been very successful in continuing their studies.
 

Structure of the Program

The program has the duration of 6 semesters and consists of 180 ECTS credits. It has a basic structure (compulsory) corresponding to 99 ECTS in Computer Science, 24 ECTS in Mathematics, 3 ECTS in Personal and Interpersonal Development and 6 ECTS in Physics or Mathematics. The remaining 48 ECTS correspond to additional training:

  42 ECTS must be obtained in specialized curricular units of the scientific area of Computer Sciences or in curricular units of the complementary formations of the FCUP in Agronomy or Astronomy or Biology or Physics or Geology or Geographic Information or Mathematics or Chemistry.
6 ECTS can be obtained in free options of the UPorto level of 1st cycle, including the FCUP.
