Physics workshops of the Department of Physics and Astronomy
The Physics workshops have the capacity to work with many materials and carry out projects and repairs in mechanics and electronics; they provide, by request, services for any entity or institution within the University of Porto.
The mechanics workshop, coordinated by
Maria Armanda Sá is especially dedicated to the conceiving, advising, designing and subsequent manufacture of parts, devices and equipment that meet the specific requirements of teachers and researchers; it may occasionally make parts in series whose prototype has been developed in partnership. Students of the MSc in Engineering Physics
perform CAD drawing and manufacturing of parts in the mechanics workshop as part of their curriculum.
The Instrumentation Laboratory carries out projects and repairs of electronic equipment (including computer equipment) and is coordinated by
Manuel Joaquim Marques.
In 2010 the mechanics workshop carried out 172 projects with average execution time of 5 days.
Materials and General Machinery:
Metal, wood, acrylic, teflon and PVC; lathes, milling machines, drills, cutting machines, press-brakes and calenders, machine polishing and sand blasting equipment for TIG, MIG and oxyacetylene.
The mechanics workshop and instrumentation laboratory carry out work for any department or research unit of the Faculty of Sciences and other units of the University of Porto, upon request and discussion. The costs of these jobs are allocated according to time and materials spent, and in accordance with per hour costs established annually.
