Objectives

Understand the basic concepts of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems).

Learn how to autonomously operate a GNSS receiver, from its programming for the acquisition of data in the field to the obtainment of coordinates, including processing the observations in the lab.

Identify sources of data and information  available for the support to field surveys and subsquent data processing .

The practical component is target more for the use of GPS due to the availability of equipment.

Learning outcomes and competences

To be able to autonomously use GPS for georreferencing points in topographic surveys.

Identify the more adequate observation methodology and processing mode in different types of applications

Program

Introduction the global positioning techniques: evolution and basic concepts.

Global Positioning Satellite Systems. Actual GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) and main characteristics: components; orbits; signals.

The GPS system: description, principles and type of observables.

Error sources that can affect GPS observations.

GPS positions determination.

Processing of teh observations. Measurements combination to minimize the errors.

Methodologies for using the system: absolute, relative and DGPS positioning.

Practical aspects of acquiring georeferenced information with GPS: planning field surveys and procedures to adopt in the field surveys.

Use of permanent reference networks.

The concept of Virtual Reference Statio.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures of theoretical exposition. Execution of practical works involving field surveys and posterior  position determination by processing the GPS measurements using commercial software.

 Assessment: distributed, with final exam and presentations and reports of practical work (60%, 40%).

Formula Evaluation:

FINAL = 0.6*E + 0.4*TP where:

E: Writen Examination, TP: Assessment of the Presentations and Report

Minimum: 50% (7/14) in the writen examination and 50% (3/6) in the Presentations and Report

 

NOTE: Final marks above 15 are only be given after a complementary oral examination.
