The PhD in Surveying Engineering does not possess an academic component, being the thesis the only curricular unit. The thesis objective is the performance of a scientific research work, under the guidance of a supervisor and a co-supervisor, if any, aiming that the student:
(i) performs a significant amount of original research;
(ii) contributes to the widening of the knowledge in the field of Surveying Engineering;
(iii) publishes the results, at least in part, in peer reviewed journals.
After finishing the thesis, the doctors in Surveying Engineering should be able to:
The research topics addressed in each thesis are defined in the work plan. The supervisors have expertise in various fields of SE and related areas: remote sensing (RS), photogrammetry, satellite positioning and navigation, GIS, image processing, etc.
Theses in progress or completed during this period:
The work is developed under the supervision of the supervisors, in the form of tutorial support. The preparation of the thesis consists of autonomous research, literature review, computational, office and / or field work, depending on each theme.
At the end of the first year, the student is assessed by the SC of the Program, by means of a written and oral presentation on the work performed during that year and taking into account the opinion of the supervisors.
The thesis is defended in a public examination in the presence of a jury constituted for that purpose. The thesis may consist of a collection of published papers properly integrated through the description of the context of the different papers in the frame of the original theme of the PhD thesis.
