Objectives

The PhD in Surveying Engineering does not possess an academic component, being the thesis the only curricular unit. The thesis objective is the performance of a scientific research work, under the guidance of a  supervisor and a co-supervisor, if any,  aiming that the student:

(i) performs a significant amount of original research;

(ii) contributes to the widening of the knowledge in the field of Surveying Engineering;

 (iii) publishes the results, at least in part, in peer reviewed journals.

Learning outcomes and competences

After finishing the thesis, the doctors in Surveying Engineering should be able to:

  1. Understand and solve new problems in wide and multidisciplinary contexts, either in SE or related fields;
  2. Conceive, design and develop scientific research in SE, identifying appropriate research methods for solving complex problems with no single solution, in new situations or contexts that require the use of multidisciplinary knowledge;
  3. Integrate knowledge, to deal with complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, evaluating their applicability and limitations;
  4. Communicate their findings both to specialists and to experts, in a clear and unambiguous manner;
  5. Promote, in academic and/or professional contexts, the technological, social or cultural progress.

Working method

Presencial

Program

The research topics addressed in each thesis are defined in the work plan. The supervisors have expertise in various fields of SE and related areas: remote sensing (RS), photogrammetry, satellite positioning and navigation, GIS, image processing, etc.

Theses in progress or completed during this period:

  • Sea Level Studies In Indonesia From Improved Coastal Satellite Altimetry
  • Evaluation of the InSAR tecnhique rin the monitorin of large infrastructures
  • Experimental Assessment Of Sea State Bias For LRM and SAR Altimetry
  • Monitoring The Vegetation Dynamics Of Itinerant Agriculture Systems Of Southern Mozambique Through RS Techniques
  • Kinematic GNSS Precise Point Positioning
  • Remote Sensing applied to the study of environment-sensitive chronic diseases: A case study applied to Quito, Ecuador
  • Perturbations sin GNSS positioning
  • Tropospheric corrections for altimetry studies over coastal and inland water regions
  • Use of unmanned aereal vehicles in map completion nad updating

Mandatory literature

Autores vários; Artigos científicos relevantes para o tema da tese.

Comments from the literature

The bibliography should be in accordance with the work plan of each student. It should consist of the set of relevant articles, which constitute the state of the art in the respective research topic.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The work is developed under the supervision of the supervisors, in the form of tutorial support. The preparation of the thesis consists of autonomous research, literature review, computational, office and / or field work, depending on each theme.

At the end of the first year, the student is assessed by the SC of the Program, by means of a written and oral presentation on the work performed during that year and taking into account the opinion of the supervisors.

The thesis is defended in a public examination in the presence of a jury constituted for that purpose. The thesis may consist of a collection of published papers properly integrated through the description of the context of the different papers in the frame of the original theme of the PhD thesis.
