Objectives

 

The BMP unit aims to address some of the molecular specificities of plants, both in what concerns the development and cell physiology characteristic of these organisms, and in what concerns the molecular approaches used for their study. The biotechnological applications powered by molecular tools are also addressed. 

Learning outcomes and competences

 The student should acquire competences to:

i) interpret and understand the molecular processes involved in plant biology;

ii) survey and deepen specific aspects of plant biology, knowing how to use the available tools;

iii) formulate experimental strategies involving molecular methodologies for the study of problems from plant functional biology and for biotechnological applications;

iv) perform an analyze with criticism experimental approaches and respective interpretations in the area of plant functional biology;

v) understand and analyze with criticism plant biotechnological applications.

Program

The BMP unit introduces plants as a study model using molecular tools and as a target for biotechnological applications, with an emphasis on the molecular methodologies used, from the techniques of molecular manipulation and transformation, to omic approaches and specific bioinformatics tools. A special focus will be addressed to the present and future development of plant biotechnology.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The unit will be developed through: i) interactive presentations by teachers, ii) presentation of a project designed by the students, iv) execution of two advanced practicals.
