Free Hand Drawing

AP100 - ECTS The discipline of Drawing aims to promote the representation and knowledge of the visible world and the mental images through manual graphic skills, in accordance with the following objectives:
- To develop the student's the ability to observe;
- To develop the ability and knowledge about the act of drawing and the sensitivity to plastic and aesthetic values;
- To create conditions for the student to face the act of projecting with spontaneity, agility and awareness;
- To stimulate the presence in the act of project of non systematic, symbolic and poetic components.
- To promote the appreciation and understanding of the need and pleasure of representation;
- To recognize drawing as a graphic expression of an intention;
- To understand that you can learn how to draw through the practice of drawing.

Biology of Plants

B121 - ECTS

The main objective of this course is to provide students with an overview of the diversity and evolution of: fungi, protists and plants. For plants it includes consideration of alternation of generations as general plant life cycle, the study of the morphology of selected families, vegetative and reproductive structures, internal anatomy features, an introductory consideration of plant physiology including water relations and internal transport, and classifycation of major plant groups with respect to their phylogenetic relationships.

Understanding   the main geological phenomena through a global approach that involves the genesis, composition and evolution of our Planet assuming Earth as a dynamic system where processes occur as an interactive cycle involving both the Earth interior and  their external effects in the atmosphere, biosphere and oceans. To be aware  of the importance of Geology in the assessment and management of natural resources as well as in the prevention of natural hazards of geological nature.


Studio: Introduction to Landscape Design I

AP111 - ECTS

This course aims at initiating the student to the practice of landscape architecture. Through the definition of a variety of restrictions, namely ecological, and aesthetical applied to a given site, students are introduced to the practice of landscape architecture emphasizing the exploration of form and function and the understanding of the landscape elements. This course explores the concept of garden and landscape. It promotes the understanding of human behavior in outdoors sites. The experience of the site/garden is at the core of the development of a series of landscape design projects.. 

Mathematics I

M195 - ECTS

The aim of this course is that the student:
- masters some basic techniques of linear algebra (operations with matrices, computation of determinants, solving linear systems) and recognizes some of its applications;
- masters some basic techniques of differential and integral calculus of one variable (calculation of derivatives, primitives and integrals, solution of differential equations) and recognizes some of its applications.

Plant Diversity

 At the end of the course students are expected to have: 1. The basic knowledge on the botanical history and plant evolution as well as major systems of classification 2. Apprehended the Taxonomy and Systematic concepts, Classification and plant Nomenclature 3. Perception and comprehension of the main philosophical types behind different taxonomic schools and main differences between them 4. Acquired the morphological concepts and vocabulary necessary to describe plants 5. Developed the taxonomical skills needed for the identification of plants and management of biological collections 6. Learned the major lines of evolution in plants 7. Studied the major botanical groups, main differences between them, their evolution and characterization. To build and use a dichotomous key as well as to manage the necessary terms and concepts used to identify vascular plants.


General Ecology

Understand the basic concepts in the field of ecology and acquire the capacity to use them to interpret and act on a real world context.

Studio: Introduction to Landscape Design II

AP112 - ECTS
  1. Acquire competences in landscape analysis, interpretation, and representation.
  2. Application of the acquired competences, mentioned in 1, in a landscape analysis and representation study.
  3. To continue the initiation of students in the landscape architecture project, through the development of competences in small scale landscape projecst, namely, in space conceptualization and zoning according to landscape architecture principles, surface grading, and use of vegetation.
  4.  Application of the acquired competences, mentioned in 3, in a proposal for a small scale garden.

Part I — Pedology To recognize soil as a system containing solid materials (mineral or organic), liquid materials (soil solution) and gaseous materials (water vapour and other gases), which may support plant growth. To know the soil forming factors. To recognize the environmental and social-economic importance of soil systems. To know the field, laboratory and other methods and techniques commonly used in soil related scientific and technological activities. Part II — Hydrology To know the functioning of underground and surface hydrologic systems. To recognize the environmental and social-economic importance of hydrologic systems. To know the field, laboratory and other methods and techniques commonly used water resources related scientific and technological activities.

Studio: Construction Techniques in Landscape Architecture

AP212 - ECTS

The curricular unit is composed by lectures, studio classes, and computer lab classes.

1. To acquire competences in producing the technical documents, drawings and written pieces, which compose a landscape architecture project.

 2. To acquire competences in Computer Aided Design (CAD 2D and CAD 3D)

Plant Ecophysiology

B210 - ECTS

The basic objective of the course is to make the student understand how plants work. Plants are complex organisms and the course will focus on physiological aspects that make them unique organisms. The course will especially focus on the biochemical and the molecular mechanisms underlying plant growth and development. How plants interact with physical conditions of their environment will be a matter to explore too.

Art History

AP221 - ECTS Develop basic skills in terms of analysis and criticism of art, with emphasis on artistic domains, forms of expression and productions relating to the object of professional practice of the landscape architect; Promote the coordination of programmatic contents.

AP211 - ECTS

1. To acquire and consolidate competences in small/medium scale public space project.

2. To acquire and consolidate competences in site assessment and site analysis.

3. To acquire and consolidate competences of space organization  according to functional, aesthetic, ecological and economic criteria.

4. To acquire and consolidate competences in sustainable design.

5. To acquire competences in the development of a Landscape Architecture Master Plan.

Techniques in Greenspace Management

AP331 - ECTS

It is intended that students are able to apply the acquired technical knowledge to landscape architecture practice, in any professional environment: design, installation, inspection, maintenance and management of green spaces.

Agriculture II


The course completes the background on agriculture and agronomy by providing an integrated view of the main of crop and animal production systems.

After attending the course, students should: 1) understand the crop intensification techniques and practices used on specialized areas of agronomy 2) be able to project basic crop water and irrigation requirements systems; 3) know the decision making in integrated pest management; 4) integrate a multidisciplinary team to study complex problems at the agricultural system level.

Studio: Management of Parks and Gardens

AP322 - ECTS

Identify the cultural operations necessary to maintain a garden or a park, relative to appropriate levels of quality and costs;

Evaluate the relative importance of maintenance and know how to establish priorities;

Develop critical capacity over the management and maintenance of a green space;

Know how to perform a maintenance plan for a pre-existing garden or park and a maintenance plan for a space in the design phase;

Be aware of the impact of maintenance actions in the evolution of green space and how they should be implemented so as to achieve the aims of the project.

Landscape Architecture History

AP321 - ECTS

This unit intends to present and debate de development of landscape design and the most important periods of landscape architecture relating them to the specificity of different historical periods and geographical and cultural contexts. Apart from its value to the understanding of the history of the profession, this unit constitutes a basic instrument for the development of skills for landscape criticism and the production of conservation plans for gardens and parks and other historic landscapes. 

It is also intended that students will be able to know and identify the different periods of the History of Landscape Architecture, main figures and paradigmatic works; to recognize the diversity of formal typologies in landscape design; to identify the geographical, social, economic, artistic and cultural contexts that underlie and motivate those forms, acknowledging the influences that they may have received from previous periods as well as the ones that they generated afterwards.

Studio: Introduction to Landscape Planning

AP332 - ECTS

IOT focuses on knowledge of: 1) the field of Landscape Ecology as a support of the spatial planning exercise according to the landscape architectural perspective, 2) the sustainable development concept and 3) also includes a brief introduction to the legal body of spatial planning exercise in Portugal.

Studio: Landscape Design Project II

AP312 - ECTS

Create and detail the organization and design of outdoor proximity spaces (e.g. small parks, gardens, green squares and small scale green structures – up to 3 ha) according to principles of ecosystems’ services promotion, social inclusion and aesthetic quality improvement. This learning experience is expressed in drawings, models, texts and tables, in order to compile a simple detailed design project.
