Objectives

- Understand the differences in nutritional requirements at the various periods of the life cycle;

- Recognize the food and nutrition as an integral part of health promotion and disease prevention, and that mortality and morbidity can be significantly reduced through the manipulation of nutrition-dietary factors during the life cycle and in particular physiological situations;

- Formulate healthy dietary patterns considering the influence of multiple factors, including cultural, socioeconomic, psychosocial, knowledge, and lifestyle

Learning outcomes and competences

The course is structured around syllabus enabling students to: understand the importance of nutrition before birth and during the first 1000 days of life, and intervene in the determinants related to the nutritional status of the mother before, during and after pregnancy, as part of health promotion, non communicable diseases prevention, and reduction in mortality and morbidity; subsequently the nutritional requirements and healthy diet in childhood, adolescence, adulthood and elderly is addressed, qualifying for nutritional and dietary intervention in these periods of life cycle.

The topic of sports nutrition is also addressed and students obtain competences to assess and organize dietary intake of athletes, as well as the use of nutritional supplements in sports

Pregnancy and lactation - Historical perspective of pregnancy; Physiological changes and nutritional perspective; Effects of malnutrition; Maternal weight; Nutritional recommendations and dietary problems in pregnancy; Physiology of lactation; Nutritional composition of breast milk; Nutritional recommendations for breastfeeding; promotion of breastfeeding;

Adults - Nutritional recommendations, eating patterns, and healthy eating in adults to prevent non-communicable diseases;

Sports - The importance of nutrition in exercise and sports; Energy metabolism; Recommendations for the athlete; hydration; Particularities before, during and after exercise, supplements.
