Objectives

The curriculum unit aims to deepen theoretical knowledge in the field of artificial nutrition, allowing students to achieve the level of fundamental knowledge essential to the development of clinical and scientific skills in intervention and research. It is intended that the student completed the course, have sufficient skills to, in a professional context, prescribing, guiding and adapting autonomously and responsibly, artificial nutrition in different clinical situations, in both adults and children, and has powers to efficiently develop clinical research in extension to clinical intervention.

The students should be able to identify when and how to use nutritional support.

Enteral feeding: Definition; Criteria for Use; Modes of administration; Choice of products.

Immunonutrition in enteral and parenteral support: advantages, disadvantages and effectiveness

Enteral feeding: Access roads; complications

Enteral feeding in children: Calculation of needs; Criteria for use; Choice of products.

Parenteral Nutrition: Definition; Criteria for use; Choice of products; Modes of administration; Parenteral nutrition bags solutions; Parenteral nutrients; Access paths.

Nutritional requirements in neonates. Support. Clinical Cases in Pediatric Enteral Feeding.

Parenteral nutrition: mechanical, infectious and metabolic complications.

Discussion of clinical cases: cancer, digestive disorders.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures: expository and interrogative method. Allow the deepening of theoretical knowledge, while associated with the practice and clinical experience of the teachers / experts invited.

Theoretical-practical classes: interrogative and demonstrative method, using the resolution of case studies.

Facilitate the interconnection of theoretical knowledge with practice, transposing it to real cases that the student safely can explore and solve.

Classes Laboratory Practice: interrogative and demonstrative method. Assist the student's familiarity with the support and laboratory technique.
