Objectives

This C.U. should constitute the basis for the research or internship to be carried out during the 3rd and 4th semesters.

Students are expected to acquire and deepen knowledge on the design and implementation of a research project/internship in community nutrition and public health nutrition. They are expected to acquired competencies and skills to identify specific situations and problems to be investigated as well as to plan research aiming to solve it.

Learning outcomes and competences

Following the knowledge and competencies acquired in the previous semester and the direct contact with the curricular unit academic body will enable the students to identify a research theme, relevant to the MSc. More than the theoretical presentation of the topics, the typology of the classes (TO) will lead to the presentation and discussion of research projects, in their several steps in which the teachers have been/are involved in. The critical thinking and identification of strong and weak points will be stimulated. This methodology will enable the students to achieve the objectives, in line with the syllabus. At the end of the C.U. the students should be able to propose and present their own research project/internship leading to the Master’s dissertation/internship.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The C.U. is organized in tutorials (48h) and seminars (8h).
It is assumed that the tutorial supervision constitutes the most adequate methodology to this C.U.  as the presentation, analysis and discussion of research projects in which the tutors take/took part will enable the students to learn through real examples, with identification of strong and weak points of the research as it will contribute to the development of their critical thinking.  The literature review, the identification of a topic to be investigated  as well as the design and planning of all project steps willl be an important contribute for the students to meet the curricular unit's learning objectives.

The students will acquire knowledge through the presentation and discussion of projects in which the tutors have participated. The seminars will take place at the end of the semestre, when each student will present a project to be developed during the 2nd year, within the Master’s scope and based in a review of the literature. The evaluation includes the written project (70%), its presentation and discussion (30%) to the group of students and teachers. This is distributed assessment without final exam.
