Objectives

Understanding the production and reception of works of art as a dynamic process of creation of meanings and values, Art Criticism, as a place of specialized reception, will be understood in a constitutive dimension: the work of criticism is not just about identifying meanings or values. prior to the reception relationship, but to produce them from the author's proposals. In this sense, the course of Art Criticism proposes to investigate the mechanisms of formation of critical reception, in a permanent critical referral relationship for its objects.

Learning outcomes and competences

The curricular unit of Art Criticism aims to investigate the mechanisms of formation of the critical reception, in a permanent critical referral relation for its objects. The objective is to define the dynamic relationship between the producer, the specialized receiver (the critic) and the unskilled receiver.

Program

We will take as a privileged starting point the authors and artists who emerge and configure Modernism (from the first decades of the twentieth century), opening to the diachronic questioning of Modernism and the emergence of contemporaneity and the various ways that define it both at the level. of artistic production, and at the level of critical discourse. It is not intended to make an exhaustive reading of movements and critical approaches, but to identify the movements of continuity or rupture at the level of artistic practices and their correlates at the level of the formulation of critical reception devices. Program Items: 1 - Critical reception as a constituent relation between the work and the artistic experience. 2 - Art criticism as a place of mediation: a) Mediation and neutrality - problematization; b) Subjectivity and objectivity - problematization; c) The quality of mediation: quality criteria of the critical text. 3 - Critical instruments: devices and procedures: the moments of critical reception work: - Contextualize; - To describe; - To interpret; - To evaluate. 4 - Artistic production as an act of production of implicit or explicit critical devices. a) Marcel Duchamp and the critical self-reconfiguration of his work. b) Joseph Kosuth and the programmatic production of the critical reception context. 5 - Experience and interpretation, and evaluation: a) How to say an image (what to say of an image)? b) Sense and visual experience - problematization; c) evaluation criteria; 6 - From Modernism to Postmodernism: the aporias of contemporaneity.
