This UC intends to analyze and recover relevant historical principles around the History of Image, making this formation converge with the practice of image production in the contemporary context, namely for:

1. Analyze the space of representation and the meaning of essential projects in the history of images;

2. Understand the recontextualization and appropriation of images, in the field of visual arts and design, and analyze the way they enhance new readings;

3. Encourage knowledge and the recovery of visual practices that face their disappearance;

4. Interpret and relate images as a legitimate trace of a historical-social construction.

Learning outcomes and competences

The learning result translates into a set of knowledge, skills and methodological and critical skills that students can use in professional and artistic practice.

Working method



The presence of the media, namely audiovisual, in contemporary society, implies a permanent contact with the most diverse types of image. Through cinema, television, the internet, video games or mobile phones, we receive a huge flow of images that we consume, often indiscriminately. This complex visuality implies a new type of visual literacy, which provides a more competent and informed look at the reality that surrounds us. In the discipline of history and image theory, it is intended, based on a diverse set of visual stimuli, to promote a broad and interdisciplinary reflection on the way images are created and read in contemporary times.

5. Literary images: about memory, writing and figuration
6. Fake images: pictures, replica and copies.
7. Appropriation and form: editorial camouflage.

Eligibility for exams

The evaluation is continuous and carried out based on the assessment of a work proposal (critical essay) and its respective oral presentation. To weight the value to be attributed at each of these moments, the following factors are considered:
1. Acquisition, articulation and application of concepts.
2. Scientific curiosity.
3. Use of an appropriate conceptual language.
4. Compliance with deadlines for the submission of proposals.
5. Attendance.

Calculation formula of final grade

Oral communication — 30%
Critical essay (2000 words) — 70%
