Objectives

The course aims to conduct a reflection on artistic practices that characterize the XX and XXI centuries. Exploring the use of the terms modernity and contemporaneity, starting with projects and artists working processes, authors and institutions that have contributed to the development of approaches as diverse as Pop, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and Post-Modernism. These historical moments will be analyzed through the techniques, materials and themes that define them, as well as through an extensive debate on cultural, economic and political issues at their origin. It is intended to encourage a broad understanding of art and contemporary.


Goals
- Deepen key ideas concerning artistic paths developed from the post-war (WWII) until today;
- Contextualize the reformative values involved in an extended notion of art;
- Analyze aspects of contemporaneity that disseminate the artistic thought today;
- Contribute to new combinations of ideas, through the exercise of interpretive reading of texts and works of criticism of modern and contemporary art.

4. Art in the public sphere

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. Educational materials are provided in English and Portuguese and focus on the recordings of artists’ projects under study.

2. Various excerpts of audio-visual documentation will be presented to discuss and contextualize the different artistic practices under study.

3. The themes of each session and its specific bibliographic references are listed under summary.


NOTE: This course should be understood as a platform for inquiry, debate and awareness. It is moved by the activities and events of the local and international artistic community and whenever possible looks forward to establish direct contact with their protagonists.
