Objectives

The “Laboratório de Imagem e Som” curricular unit aims to foster, through an experimental approach, a laboratory-like context that explores the plasticity of sound and image at artistic practice. With this purpose, it will be provided the essential and necessary expertise, based on the applied learning of different audiovisual technologies. Through a critical and attentive approach on the specific potential of the used medium, it will be promoted the development of individual and collective instruments of analytical and critical thinking on the different moments of the work done during the semester. Taking into account the specific characteristics of audiovisual production, collaborative work and the collective sharing of artistic practice will be encouraged, alongside with the development of individual projects.

Learning outcomes and competences


  • Acquisition of expertise that can allow an introductory exploration on the field of audiovisual production.

  • Mastering of the specific languages used in the context of contemporary artistic practice, with a focus in the area of sound, video and moving image.

  • Development of critical thinking and analysis around artistic practice.

  • Promotion of an autonomous artistic practice that enables the understanding of the multiple aesthetic possible decisions.

Program

Laboratório de Imagem e Som is dedicated to plastic experimentation of both visual and audio media. It is intended to provide the expertise needed to master the different audiovisual technologies, with particular emphasis on the recording, editing and playback of both image and sound, as well as their use in the context of contemporary artistic practices. The specific contents of this curricular unit will be converted in practical proposals, and will focus on the performativity of sound and image; production and presentation in real time; visual and audio editing and composition; plasticity of media relations; spatial distribution of audiovisual elements; image and sound installation; and sound design practices.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Focusing on an intense, regular and experimental practice, in this curricular unit, it will be stimulated the constant creation of new situations and challenges. “Laboratório de Imagem e Som” will be developed according to a theoretical and practical model that will focus both on lecture and training classes, as well as in periods of discussion and development of practical exercises and projects, undertaken individually and in working groups.

The acquired knowledge will be assessed both in the solving of practical exercises and the evaluation of its applicability to specific projects.

Apart from the quality of the projects developed by each student during the semester, in its various phases, in the evaluation it will be valued of the following factors, without prejudice to other aspects included in the program:

  1. a) Attendance.
  2. b) Participation in discussions and other activities.

c) Compliance with deadlines established in this curricular unit.
