Description: Abstract

The Master in Image Design acts upon a contemporary cultural and media universe where the image is put forward as the new unit of literacy and where its production and playback devices unfold in an increasingly complex range of possibilities. MDI is a multidisciplinary course furthering research in the areas of visual information, illustration, new media, documentary image, and the design of citizenship and social development.

Courses Units


P101 - ECTS — Analyze the image beyond its representation.

— Research and validate the image as contemporary literacy unit.

— Recognize the importance of the image at the academic, cultural and professional levels.

— Understand the importance of visual narratives around contemporary projects, in cultural and technological fields.

— Understand the importance of preserving documentaries capable of providing us with a view of the World from an individual, local, regional or global standard, bringing together a transmissible heritage of individual and collective memory.

— Develope projects where the image as a structuring entity of communication design and also related with multiple branches of knowledge.

— Develope design projects sustained by the use of image, crossing scientific areas increasingly complex.

— Produce prototypes, models and projects in the field of broad communication design, applied to the market and the respective needs of its public.

Digital Culture

MDICD - ECTS This course unit intends to map the current technocultural context and the way how computational and digital systems have been transforming it. Starting from historical and technological contexts, focusing not only on computational technologies but also on their impact in the arts, design, culture, and society, this course unit will offer analysis and reflection mechanisms for the development of their critique.

Visual Devices


History and Theory of Image

HTI104 - ECTS This UC intends to analyze and recover relevant historical principles around the History of Image, making this formation converge with the practice of image production in the contemporary context, namely for:

1. Analyze the space of representation and the meaning of essential projects in the history of images;

2. Understand the recontextualization and appropriation of images, in the field of visual arts and design, and analyze the way they enhance new readings;

3. Encourage knowledge and the recovery of visual practices that face their disappearance;

4. Interpret and relate images as a legitimate trace of a historical-social construction.



This course is dedicated to the study of computational systems and the design of the interaction with them.

Research and Project Methodologies (I)

DIMIII - ECTS Providing an added understanding of the premises, expectations and procedures of the scientific universe.

Providing students with strujcturing knowledge associated with research practice.

Providing students with structuring skills associated with research practice.

Focus on applied research that will revert towards projects to be developed, as well as research models that may be adopted by others in the future.

Adopting hybrid methodological approaches, according to the projects at stake.

Creating a forum on emerging paradigms of research in design, visual culture and image.

Acquisition of competences in formatting and structuring research documents.

Image Narratives

NI105 - ECTS

Introduction to (audio) visual narratives theory and history.
Motivate different methods of analysis. Accentuate a critical and contextualized reading. Statement of an individual and creative discourse.


Photography and Film Practices


The PF&C (Photography and Cinema Practices) course enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to:

— Conceptually develop a theme, exploring the specificity of the photographic and cinematographic medium;

— Understand the relevance of photography and cinema in contemporary culture, art and society.

— Rehearse multiple formats of presentation and layout of the photographic and cinematographic image: production, edition, exhibition, publication.

— Enhance the technical initiation of hybrid analog and digital processes in the context of image archives.


Project / Dissertation / Internship


— In depth research methodologies to equip students in critical thinking about visual nature of projects to be undertaken during the semester;
— Research and validation of the image as contemporary unit literaci;
— Develop scientific interests that intersect with research projects able to provide us with a view of the world from a single regional or global standard, location, bringing a transmissible heritage of individual and collective memory;
- Understanding of grammars related to the image in the contemporary context, both cultural as well as technological.

Research and Project Methodologies (II)


The main objective of this course is to assist students in writing the methodologies chapter. To this end it will address the key issues of the methodological process in parallel with a written assignment coupled with an oral presentation.
