A rua conheceu
Abstract (EN):
The basic system of relations between the urban elements has marked the ancient
tradition of the city. The marginal building and the idea of the street as an alignment were
the great “certainties” of the growth of the historical city that the modern movement
began questioning, according to ruptured voices and indifference to it´s existence.
The progressive opening of the block let us see some invisible spaces which until
then were hidden in the urban net, while it adds new ones due to an “uncommitted”
implantation, which tends progressively to become free towards the road layout. These
spaces, resulting from the spacing between the collective housing building and the
street, are the study cases of this present investigation.
The rupture vision is contradicted by another one which in a positive way analises
the accomplishments of modern movement and builds some links with the historical
city, by pointing out the eighteen industrial city as the responsible one for the corruption
of the urban traditional forms.
The “Arquiteto Marques da Silva” street joins the characteristics of the modern and
historical cities which in free union they compete for urban potentiality, introducing
the difference in the continuity of the urban net, without questioning the role of the
rule and of the exception. The street in study was projected at the same time as the
construction of the working class neighborhood of the architect Januário Godinho in
1935, reaching its moment as the greatest building in the 50’s with the development
of the two Plan Sets. The street has met important determinations of the different
City Plans attached to its urban development period set up by the building. The
systematization of all the gathered information near each building permission process
has allowed characterizing the street through the open spaces in study.
