Objectives

1 Theoretical and practical aproach to public spaces as architectonic entities composed by all kinds of buildings, urban infrastructures and natural forms.
2. Comprehension of the Architecture of Public Space in the context of the Significant Forms, socialy inclusive and sustainable.
3. Experimental research and personal thinking practiced with the instruments of architecture (hand and computer design and modeling, subject to measure, geometry and construction reasoning); photo, bibliography and other iconography location and credits.
4 Selection of critical arguments for the architecture of Public Space supported by the experimental case study.
5. Case study will be chosen by the student among several proposes presented by the professor, either as an individual work and/or after the constitution of teams.

Learning outcomes and competences

Domain of the disciplinary instruments of architecture (plan, section and model) aplied to existing and visited public spaces.
Being able to identify, construct and comunicate critical arguments for the Architecture of Public Space exctracted from experimental work.

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Observation drawing, CAD and modeling.

Program

1. Public space as a physical reality. Public Space as an architectonic category.
2. Geography, History (of the city and of society), Tecnics and Arts.
3. Research instruments and methods for an urban or architectonic fact towards theory and project strategy. Limits of an urban fact and identification of the elements that contribute for its form.
4. Urban design and their material and architectonic expression. Unity, repetition and exception. 
5. About Scale, Site layout and proportion – compromises of the building towards the public space. Buildings in the urban scene. 
6. Adequacy of forms to their uses and economy of the means of expression. Contribution of the building systems to the architectonic expression of one building and one part of the city. Amplification of the classical concept of “firmitas”. The arguments of construction perfection and technical innovation. 
7. Interdependence of building projects and their exterior spaces. All architecture stands in the Public Space.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methods serve the theorical-practical nature of the course.  workshp form will used for coatching methods, team work, modeling and multimédia use of materials.

Presentation of preliminary results of case study in class with (psm) portable space model ( 1.200, white cardboard, foldable to A4 size).
Exibition and attendance to final presentation in FAUP Gallery on date previously accorded.
Repport of case study as a research project - Electronic in CD or Pendrive

Spanish, French, English and italian will be accepted but the final work must have an abstract in portuguese.
