The course "Informal Territories: Rights, Legitimacy and Citizenship" will take place between the 8th and the 11th of May at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP, ‘Casa Cor de Rosa’), in a joint organization with the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa).
This seminar will discuss the issue of 'informality' in its multiple understandings, causes and motivations, points of view and roles. In this debate, namely the legitimacy of decisions, the rights and citizenship, as well as discretion and transparency in urban management, will be some of the issues to be analysed, towards more balanced and fair territories.
This debate will be carried out through several thematic panels, ending with a round table:
- ABSENCE OF THE STATE: self-produced housing and areas of illegal genesis
- FLEXIBILIZATION OF THE STATE: 'informal planning' and urban negotiation
- STATUS OF EXCEPTION: regulatory changes and civil mobilization
- BEYOND THE STATE: informal economy and real estate pressure
- PACE OF THE STATE: short-length projects and their socio-spatial impact
- RETHINKING THE STATE: reinventing the state at the local level (round table)
This course will be especially aimed at students of advanced studies in various disciplinary areas, professionals of urban planning, technicians from the municipal and the regional administration, members of associations and non-governmental organizations, among others.
