Currently serving as Full Professor at the University of Porto School of Nursing (ESEPUP), Prof. Abreu is President of the Scientific Council and Coordinator of a Master Programme in Mental Health and Psychiatry. His teaching portfolio encompasses medical anthropology, clinical supervision, psychiatry—particularly dementia and mental health of the elderly—and qualitative research methodologies.

In recognition of his academic contributions, he was awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa by the Polytechnic University of Portalegre in 2017. Prof. Abreu is a researcher affiliated with RISE-Health and RISE-Lab (Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto), as well as CEDIP (Brazil). His interdisciplinary research spans mental health disorders (dementia, depression, suicide), infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, COVID-19), clinical supervision, and culturally responsive healthcare. More recently, his work has focused on Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Bayesian methods, and Optimal Control applied to health systems and epidemiology.

 

Prof. Abreu has held several strategic academic and governance roles, including nine years of institutional administration experience. He served as President of the Board of Curators at the Polytechnic University of Portalegre (2012–2017), contributed to the Scientific Commission for Doctoral Studies in Nursing at the University of Lisbon, and collaborated with Portugal’s Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES). He has also been a panel expert for the Research Council of Lithuania and a member of ASMELP—the Lusophone Mental Health and Psychiatry Association.

 

With a global academic footprint, Prof. Abreu has delivered over 200 keynote and invited presentations across Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia. His participation in European-funded projects underscores his leadership in transnational educational and research collaborations. He is the author of several acclaimed academic book. As a reviewer and editorial board member of multiple peer-reviewed journals, he actively contributes to the academic community.

 

Prof. Abreu speaks Portuguese (native), English, French, and Spanish fluently, with working knowledge of Italian and Russian. His career reflects a sustained commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry, internationalization, innovation in higher education, and the strategic development of health research and practice.
