Objectives


  • Identify clients' needs in terms of managing the signs and symptoms of cancer.

  • Relate these to the physical and psychological processes tha are the focus of nursing care for people with cancer.

  • Identify the assessment data for physical and psychological processes in people with cancer.

  • Identify nursing diagnoses relating to physical and psychological processes in people with cancer.

  • Identify differentiated nursing interventions that promote control of signs and symptoms of bodily and psychological process compromise in people with cancer.

  • Develop students' clinical skills in the context of advanced professional practice with people with cancer.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the course unit, students should be able to:
Analyse the pathophysiological and psychological processes that underlie the manifestation of the primary signs and symptoms of cancer.

Identify and interpret relevant clinical and psychological assessment data to enable the early recognition of disturbances in bodily and psychological processes associated with cancer and its treatments.

Based on scientific evidence and the systematic assessment of people with cancer, formulate nursing diagnoses in the field of bodily and psychological processes.

Plan and implement differentiated nursing interventions aimed at controlling signs and symptoms, preventing complications, and promoting the well-being and quality of life of people with cancer.

Demonstrate advanced clinical skills based on clinical reasoning and informed decision-making in professional practice with cancer patients.

  • Cancer as a chronic or advanced disease throughout the life cycle.

  • It involves managing the signs and symptoms related to cancer and its treatment.

  • Prevention and management of complications associated with cancer.


  • The focus is on aspects relevant to nursing practice in relation to the bodily and psychological processes that constitute the signs and symptoms of these conditions.

  • Strategies for the initial assessment of people with cancer and their subsequent progress during hospitalisation, using data from surveillance and monitoring to identify compromises in bodily and psychological processes and to monitor progress and responses to identified problems.


  • Nursing diagnoses in the context of bodily and psychological compromises translate into an intervention plan aimed at controlling signs and symptoms and preventing complications through early detection.


  • Differentiated nursing interventions with integrity references for the identified nursing diagnoses to prevent complications and control compromises resulting from cancer, including nursing interventions to manage cancer and refer patients to other professionals.

Eligibility for exams

Each student is required to attend 75% of the classes scheduled for the course unit, in each of its different types of classes or teaching sessions.
Students covered by the situations provided for by law, namely those with special status, such as Working Students, are exempt from the attendance requirements mentioned above.

Calculation formula of final grade

Scientific rigour and quality of the literature review (50%).

Relevance of critical analysis and implications for practice (10%).

Quality of poster (organisation, clarity, visual and informational impact) (20%).

Oral presentation and discussion skills (30%).
