The school awards are aimed to encourage and distinguish the best students under certain conditions governing each award, and in some cases, former students.
These awards are given by the University, the faculties or by institutions external to the University.
The awards are governed by regulations, which state:
The awards can be allocated to one student only, or be allocated to several students over the same year.
Often, the awards doe not have criteria to choose the best student which are easy to apply in today’s world, such as the "Nuno Salgueiro" award for degree students in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Pharmacy Faculty, which should be awarded to the poorest student of those achieving best results in the final year (5th year).
Most of the school awards are allocated on an annual basis from the year of publishing the regulation, but there may be awards which are not allocated each year on a mandatory basis, which tends to be the case with external institution awards, such as the "D. Ana Caetano "Award, which depends on a request by the Salvador Caetano Foundation to the University, to indicate which students are in a position to receive the award.
There are awards in which the amount is reduced considerably and if no update is proposed to the Senate of the University of Porto, then it may not be worthwhile making the award. For example, in the Pharmacy Faculty there is the "Professor Carlos Richter" award, with a value of 2,39 ¤ (480 Escudos).
