Apresentação Pessoal

António Morais obtained his medical degree in 1993 from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto (FMUP). Since the beginning of his Pulmonology Residency in 1996, he joined FMUP as an invited lecturer and researcher, participating in multiple curricular units and activities of both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. He has conducted studies in respiratory diseases, particularly in the Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) field, and completed his master’s thesis “HLA e polimorfismos genéticos de citocinas inflamatórias na caracterização imunogenética da sarcoidose” “HLA and genetic polymorphisms of inflammatory cytokines in the immunogenetic characterization of sarcoidosis.” in 2009 and his PhD thesis “Doenças Pulmonares Difusas: do fenótipo ao genótipo” “Diffuse Lung Diseases: from phenotype to genotype.” in 2016, both at FMUP.

From 2016 to 2025, he served as an Invited Assistant Professor of Medicine at FMUP. Since September 2025, he has been an Associate Professor of Medicine at the same institution. He is the supervisor of two curricular units, Respiratory and Thoracic Diseases and Interstitial Lung Disorders, and supervises/supervised four master’s theses and three PhD theses. He has served on juries for numerous master’s and PhD dissertations at various institutions.

From 2018 to 2024 he was a researcher at i3S, and from 2024 he has been a researcher at Rise-Health.

He is author or co-author of 114 articles published in multiple peer‑reviewed journals. He has been invited to 87 lectures/conferences as a speaker at national and international scientific meetings and is the author or co‑author of 321 oral presentations and posters at such meetings.

He was chief editor of Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia (Pulmonology) since 2019, with involvement dating back to 2012. He is a reviewer for several scientific journals, particularly in the respiratory field.
 

Medical Career:

After two years in general practice, he trained as a Pulmonology Resident from 1996 to 2002, and subsequently served as a Pulmonology Assistant until 2014, when he became a Pulmonology Consultant in the Respiratory Diseases Department at Hospital São João.

His main interests are Diffuse Lung Diseases, Bronchoscopy, Lung Cancer, and COPD. At Hospital São João, he chaired the Diffuse Lung Diseases Group from 2006 to 2024, and he was a member of the Lung Cancer Group from 2008 to 2019, and of the Pulmonary Hypertension Group from 2008 onward. He is an interventional bronchoscopist and, in 2014, introduced in Portugal a diagnostic tool for Diffuse Lung Diseases via cryobiopsy.

He has mentored 74 pulmonology residents in the area of ILD. He has also supervised four pulmonology residents’ internships at Hospital de São João.

He has served as an assessor to the Clinical Directorate of Hospital de São João from September 2019 to October 2022.

Since May 2024, he has been the Head of the Respiratory Diseases Department at Hospital São João.

He was also a National Coordinator and Principal Investigator in several clinical trials, namely in Diffuse Lung Diseases, Lung Cancer, Pulmonary Hypertension and COPD.

Organizer of several scientific events, notably five National Congresses of Pulmonology, one Pulmonology Congress of the North, and thirteen courses on Diffuse Pulmonary Diseases at CHUSJ/FMUP.

He was a member of the Ordem dos Médicos Pulmonology Board (Colégio da Especialidade) for two mandates, 2010–2012 and 2012–2014. Since 2024 he has been the current Head of the Board.

From 2016 to 2019 he served as the Consultant for Diffuse Lung Diseases for the Direção Geral da Saúde’s Respiratory National Program. Also, from 2016 to 2019, he was a member of the Comissão de Avaliação de Tecnologias de Saúde (CATS) at INFARMED.

He served as President of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia (2019–2021 and 2021–2024).

He is an active member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), the World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Diseases (WASOG), and the Portuguese Pneumology Society (SPP).
