Master in Oral Surgery

Learning objectives (knowledge, skills and competences) to be developed by students, operationalization of objectives and measurement of their degree of achievement:
Ensure skills related to scientific research methodology, data analysis, problem solving and surgical and therapeutic planning, as well as communication and presentation of multidisciplinary teamwork.
Ability to understand the patient as a whole, expertly handling the clinical criteria for patient selection, as well as the absolute and relative indications and contraindications of the various therapeutic procedures and specifically the surgical techniques to be performed.
These objectives are achieved through theoretical teaching of subjects in the field of oral surgery as well as seminars for the presentation and discussion of clinical cases based on the clinical activity of students. This clinical activity is carried out at the clinic of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Porto, simulating in a real environment with patient care with faculty monitoring.


Objectives

The Master in Oral Surgery intends that students:
- know how to apply the knowledge acquired in the 1st cycle of studies in the scientific area in solving problems in a broad and multidisciplinary context.
- be able to integrate knowledge, know how to communicate it clearly, having the capacity for lifelong learning in a self-directed and autonomous way.
- ensure adequate knowledge of the basic sciences of Oral Surgery for an adequate solution of the best diagnostic and surgical procedures in an evidence-based perspective.
- provide adequate clinical and surgical experience, acquired under supervision that is suitably prepared for the development of skills that allow the precise performance of prevention, therapeutic and surgical techniques for oral pathologies and anomalies related to the science of oral surgery.
- ensure skills related to scientific research methodology, data analysis, problem solving and surgical and therapeutic planning, as well as communication and presentation of work in a multidisciplinary team.
The student must also be able to carry out a master's thesis with a research component related to the subjects taught in the scope of the study cycle. Students should have knowledge of the fundamentals of the research process in the field of dentistry, systems and information search engines related to basic and clinical research and be able to prepare, present and publicly defend research projects.
