The Comparative Iberian Studies Section, created in July 2002, comprises a group of teachers and researchers of Portuguese Culture and Spanish Studies (namely Spanish Literature, Spanish Culture and Hispanic Linguistics) and aims carrying out a comprehensive scientific and pedagogic study of each field, as well as of the relationships between Peninsular and Latin-American cultures, literature and languages.
This Section has the following specific objectives:
a) promote the research and teaching of the mentioned scientific fields, particularly from an interdisciplinary perspective, in cooperation with the DEPER and the Faculty of Arts, and wth similar Portuguese and Spanish academic institutions;
b) contribute for the training of researchers in Iberian compared cultural, literary and linguistic studies and support the teaching of Spanish Language and Culture in Primary and Secondary Portuguese Schools and Portuguese Culture abroad;
c) support, in close cooperation with the Institute of Iberian Studies, the organization of Colloquia, Meetings, and Conferences in order to encourage a better understanding and dissemination of the Iberian cultures;
d) promote the access to Spanish Language and Culture – and, eventually, of other languages and cultures found in Spain – through Open Courses and directed to a non-academic public.
