Objectives

This subject is designed for students to broaden their understanding of German Literature through the study of literary works from different German-speaking countries in the period between the 1930s and the end of the 20th century. In addition to providing new insights at the literary and historical/cultural level, the programme shall seek to consolidate and broaden the analytical and interpretative skills students should have previously acquired in ‘Introduction to Literary Studies’ as well as in other literature subjects. Students shall also put into practice and apply their critical/analytical and evaluative skills through the guided reading of selected critical bibliography.

Teaching methods and learning activities

An eclectic approach shall be applied comprising theoretical classes (mostly consisting in formal lectures), theoretical-practical classes (combining both theory and practice) as well as classes of a more practical nature, encouraging students’ active participation.

Eligibility for exams

Continuous assessment – at least 75% of class attendance is required.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final exam – 100%
OR
Continuous assessment – 2 written tests, each counting for 1/3 of the final mark (in certain circumstances, the 2nd test may be substituted by a written essay paper). Active class participation is counts 1/6 towards the final mark and the short reviews count for another 1/6.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students who obtain 12 marks or above in the 1st test may submit a written essay paper instead of taking the 2nd one. In this case, the essay paper shall focus on the subject-matters to be covered in that test.

Final exam in the resit exam period.
