Objectives

The course aims to encourage students' descriptive, reflective and analytical attitudes toward French language, so they become increasingly aware of the mechanisms and principles underlying this language they study, and they become able to use it thoughtfully.

Learning outcomes and competences

Successful students will:

  • understand French language as a system ruled by universal principles and particular parameters;
  • have improved their formal knowledge of lexical, phraseological and syntactic aspects of the French language;
  • be able to use critical thinking about French language aspects, to analyze them and describe them using appropriate metalanguage;
  • have learned how to use the standard reference material for the study of French linguistics: grammars, dictionaries, electronic corpora, and on-line reference material.
