The course in Applied Language Studies represents a diversified and flexible proposal intended for students interested in the study of languages. It offers two different profiles:
  • Translation
  • Languages Applied to Business Affairs.
It aims to respond to the need for a 1st-cycle academic preparation that not only fosters in students the ability to solve problems arising from situations of contact between different cultures at various levels, but also guarantees the growing need for appropriate expression at a more general language level.

In this sense, the 1st cycle in Applied Language Studies, Translation profile, provides essential training with a view to pursuing specialized studies in the field of translation as part of a 2nd cycle. This profile makes it possible to fulfill an old aspiration: to have complete translation training in this Faculty.

This 1st cycle in Applied Language Studies also seeks to respond to emerging demands in the geographical, economic and socio-cultural framework in which the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Porto is located through the creation of a second training profile in Languages Applied to Business Affairs. By providing a good knowledge basis in two foreign languages in legal sciences, communication and (inter)cultural studies, this profile presents itself as multidisciplinary training for future professionals in the fields of services, management or culturally-based industries.

Being aware that language competence implies a multilingual and multicultural training, this course reinforces and promotes intercultural communicative competence to enable a better understanding of the problems and needs of a world, strongly characterized, by complex and multicultural societies.
