The proposal for the creation of a PhD in Sociology is the result of a need of deepening, in new moulds, of the post-graduate teaching space and sociological research in the Sociology Department of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

With the creation of this course, we seek to provide a deeper and more reflexive space of sociological learning and a broader horizon of debate, as well as theoretical, methodological and technical inquiry about the matters to be analysed; we simultaneously perspective the exam on emerging themes and the construction of new theoretical and methodological challenges.

To follow these goals, this course resorts to FLUP’s Sociology Department professors. We seek, however, to articulate their actions with the colaboration of other teachers, whether they are from the University of Porto, from other Portuguese universities or from foreign universities. For that purpose, we will organize a cycle of conferences that will contribute to a dynamization of the teaching component in the course’s second year.

Besides this work perspective, we hope the students of this PhD may articulate their analysis proposals with the research done by the Sociology Institute of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
