Bachelor in Geography

The Department of Geography from FLUP minister from 2007/2008 school year, the 1st Cycle Course - Geography bachelor degree restructured under the Bologna Process, continuing the training that took place in FLUP since 1973.

In the academic year 2012/2013 was approved a curriculum restructuring that produced some changes in the syllabus. Given the similarities with the pre-existing study plan the new curriculum applied imeadiatamente to each year of the degree, minimizing any inconvenience to students.

The undergraduate degree in Geography provides a solid base providing the graduates of knowledge in this scientific fields:
  • Environment and global change
  • Climate, geomorphology and natural hazards
  • Natural resources
  • Social and economic issues
  • Planning and development
  • Geographic Information Systems
The course lasts six semesters and a crediting of 180 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). These can be frequented by following one of two ways:
  • DEGREE IN GEOGRAPHY
    Training in the scientific area of Geography, earning 120 ECTS (mandatory in Geography) and 60 ECTS free choice of optional areas of Geography, Humanities, Social Sciences, Information and Communication Sciences;
  • DEGREE IN GEOGRAPHY WITH MINOR IN HISTORY
    completion of 120 ECTS + 54 ECTS in Geography in History and also a course of 6 ECTS in the option areas listed above.
The 1st Cycle Degree in Geography, in the 'spirit' of Bologna, allows studying 2nd cycle (Master) and 3rd cycle (PhD), preferably in the subject area of geography or related sciences.

At present, the main professional areas for action or intervention where you can find a degree in Geography are education (primary, secondary and higher) and regional planning in sectorial planning (environmental, natural hazards, tourism, commerce or transport) or integrated planning (PROT's, PDM's, PU's, ...), whether in local government - local councils - or central government) or private companies.



Objectives

The objectives of the Geography bachelor degree are grouped under four headings:
  • Training scientific discipline: to promote the acquisition of a broad knowledge on territorial issues, explain and test explanatory models, and apply methodologies for analysis, diagnosis and intervention on the territory
  • Training multidisciplinary research: to promote the interdisciplinarity of knowledge through the possibility of obtaining optional courses in any area of science taught in FLUP or other units of the University of Porto.
  • Adaptability: to train graduates to be able to tackle new problems in a creative way, and to adapt to today's rapid changes.
  • Training plan: to increase the capacity of communication, teamwork and interpersonal and intercultural relationships, promoting mobility, notably by encouraging the use of existing European programs, such as the Erasmus+ .

Professional Abilities

The graduate and post-graduate degree in Geography is enabled to perform professional activities and apply for postgraduate training in the following areas:
  • Teaching of Geography in primary, secondary and higher educational levels
  • Planning, Land Use and Management
  • Cartography and Geographic Information Systems
  • Research in Physical Geography and Human Geography.
