  • A national study path (‘Mestrado em Estudos Alemães’), taught exclusively at the University of Porto, with lectures in the first year, the second year being dedicated to research leading to the elaboration of a dissertation or to a project (and respective report). Within the framework of this profile, students attend courses in German culture, language, linguistics, literature and pedagogy and may specialize in either German culture / literature or in the teaching of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache).

  • An international study path (‘Mestrado em Estudos Alemães - Master in Transnational German Studies’), which is a joint degree course of four European universities with structured student mobility, taught in the first semester at the UP, in the second semester at the Université du Luxembourg (Luxembourg) , in the third semester at Johannes Gutenberg-Universtät Mainz (Germany), and in the fourth semester at Università degli Studi di Palermo (Italy). 2. German literature,
  3. Employability.

Objectives

The Mestrado em Estudos Alemães aims to achieve the following objectives:

  3. To encourage intercultural competences acquired within academic and social contexts, thereby sponsoring active citizenship, the promotion of civic competences and mutual understanding;
  4. To offer students integrated training in the specialization area of German Studies, through contact with different academic realities;
  5. To solidify and deepen the students’ knowledge of German language, literature and culture, thereby promoting their research capacity and their scientific interest in this area;
  6. To analyse the culture and literature of the German area in the European context, assessing the (diachronic and synchronic) processes of intercultural transfer that, from the very outset, underpinned the development of German culture and literature;
  7. To train a) professionals in the area of German (in the widest sense), b) specialists who participate in national and international teams and networks for the management and supervision of cultural and literary heritage in the context of German Studies, c) future teachers of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) in Portugal and abroad.

Employment Prospects

The career prospects for the course are:
  • Teaching German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) in Portugal and abroad;
  • Working in German-speaking companies in Portugal and abroad, among others in those dedicated to translation and the management and the supervision of German cultural and literary heritage, such as associations, publishers, museums and other cultural bodies.
