The adequacy of the graduate degree in History of Art (ministered at FLUP since 1999) to the Bologna Program has been approved by Deliberation no. 707/2007 of the Permanent Section of the University of Porto’s Senate and registered by the Directorate General for Higher Education – cf. Rules for the cycle of Studies conducive to the Graduation in History of Art (Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 77 – April 19th 2007, pp. 10207-10210).
Education competences
The 1st Cycle of Studies in History of Art provides the graduate with:
- Understanding the transformation of the artistic object in time(s) and space(s);
- An integrated reading of artistic objects in their contexts of creation, production and reception over a long period;
- Perception of the various dimensions of artistic objects (forms, materials, techniques, modes of production, uses and critical fortune);
- Ability to critically analyse images in different media and contexts;
- Knowledge and skills of research developed individually or collaboratively and in transdisciplinary environments.
Employment Prospects
The degree in History of Art aims to prepare students to develop a critical and analytical sense of artistic assets, teach them to recognise the basis of the transformation of forms, materials and techniques in time and space, and broaden the horizons of their perception of heritage, promoting the development of specific and transversal skills.
The theoretical and practical training provided throughout the degree is designed to train technicians to join specialised teams in different areas within the framework of Museums, Galleries, Auction Houses, Cultural Centres, Foundations, Institutes, Companies, Municipalities, Tourist Information Operators and other public or private entities.
