Apresentação Pessoal

Álvaro Cunha is Full Professor at Department of Civil Engineering of FEUP, University of Porto, Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit CONSTRUCT (Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction), Past-Head of Laboratory of Vibrations and Monitoring (ViBest) of FEUP and Past-President of the Scientific Council of the Exact Sciences and Engineering of FCT.

His main fields of interest are Dynamics of Bridges and Special Structures, Measurement of Vibrations, Modal Identification, Structural Health Monitoring of Large Civil Structures and Control of Vibrations.

He has been PI of 12 national or european Research Projects, and researcher of other 11, focused on the themes: (1) Dynamic measurements with Laser sensors, (2) Modal Identification of Large Structures and Finite Element Updating, (3) Dynamics of Cable-Stayed Bridges, (4) Dynamic Effects of Traffic Loads on Bridges, (5) Wind and Structures, (6) Fatigue assessment in metallic Railway Bridges, (7) Vibrations in Footbridges, (8) Control of Vibrations in Civil Structures, (9) Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges, Concrete Dams and onshore and Offshore Wind Turbines.

He has been responsible by the development and implementation of 12 vibration based SHM demonstrators in large Civil structures with different typologies (roadway and railway bridges, footbridges, stadium suspension roof, wind turbine tower and arch dams), active since 2007, and creation of a digital data repository stemming from all monitoring activity.

He was involved in the supervision of 18 concluded PhD Theses and 1 ongoing.

As Head of ViBest, he was the main responsible for scientific and technical consultancy, specially related to the dynamic tests of large bridges and special structures, design and implementation of vibration control devices, long-term dynamic monitoring of large Civil infrastructures and aerodynamic studies.

Álvaro Cunha has been reviewer of about 30 prestigious international journals, referee of Research Project Proposals from RFCS Program, ERC (EU), NRC (Canada), FWO (Belgium), EMPA (Switzerland) and University of Luxembourg, and Referee of Promotion to Tenure at ETH (Switzerland). He has been also member of Juries for Associate and Full Professor or PhD degree at Universities of Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra and Bristol (UK), Barcelona (UPC, Spain), KULeuven (Belgium), Pol Milan, Bologna (Italy) and Fuzhou (China).

He is President of the European Association on Structural Dynamics (EASD), member of the Ex Board of EVACES association, and he was Chair of SEM Civil Structures Testing Technical Division, Vice-Chair of IABSE Working Group 4 on Vibrations, Chair of the international conferences EVACES 07, SMART 09, CIAHP 2010, IOMAC 2013, EURODYN 2014 and SHMII-10 and Co-Chair of FOOTBRIDGE 08.

He is author of 207 documents indexed at SCOPUS, with a h-factor of 38, with 5469 citations. He contributed also to several books on Dynamic Testing of Bridges and Special Structures, as well as Guidelines on Vibrations in Floors and Footbridges (HIVOSS).

He received 18 national or international awards/ distinctions.
