Apresentação Pessoal
Daniel Clemente is a Post-Doc Researcher at U.Porto and CIIMAR (Portugal), whose background is Civil Engineering - Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment. He has been developing marine renewable energy (MRE) technologies through physics-driven and data-driven methods, including Statistics, since his M.Sc. proof-of-concept of the E-Motions wave energy converter (WEC). Daniel also studies potential applications and synergies of WECs, such as offshore aquaculture, triboelectric nanogenerators, desalination, green hydrogen and coastal protection. Profile highlights: i) His Ph.D. studies began in 2017 to further develop E-Motions, being successfully concluded in June 2022 (Grade A). In 2020, he was awarded an FCT Ph.D. grant (2020.05280.BD). In 2024 and 2025, he received the Prof. Doutor Joaquim Sarmento Award (Civil Engineering) and the APRH Prize, respectively, for the Best Ph.D. Thesis; ii) Project participation: Se@Ports (2017-2018); i.nano.WEC (2018-2020); ATLANTIDA (2022-2023); WEC4Ports (2024); and HYDEA (ongoing). He has further assisted projects such as PORTOS, OPWEC, Ocean3R and EuReComp, working alongside industrial (INEGI, Port of Vigo and APDL), entrepreneurial (I.nano.E, INDUCTIVA.AI and IMDC), NPOs (Fórum Oceano, Energylab and IAHR), and academic (IH Cantabria, Universities of Oviedo and Maynooth) partners; iii) Experimental expertise: 2D and 3D physical modelling of WECs and coastal protection solutions at U.Porto's wave basin. Experience with wave probes, wavemaker system, load cells and motion tracking systems (Qualisys); Numerical expertise: ANSYS Aqwa, DualSPHysics, SNL-SWAN, IBM SPSS, MATLAB Optimization Toolbox, Python, Zotero, ChatGPT, and data acquisition (e.g., HR DAQ Suite and Qualisys QTM); iv) Daniel's work has been published in peer-reviewed, indexed Q1 and Q2 journals (h-index 12, over 850 citations, 25 indexed works) of high relevance in the fields of ocean and coastal engineering, sustainable energy, environment and civil engineering. This extends to book chapters and numerous submissions in national and international conferences, such as EWTEC, MARTECH and IAHR Congresses; v) Scientific missions: IACOBUS - Universities of Santiago de Compostela and Vigo (Spain, 2018 and 2019); WECANet COST ACTION CA1710 - Universities of Maynooth (Ireland, 2020), Plymouth (England, 2021) and Edinburgh (Scotland, 2022); FCT Mobility – IISTA (Spain, 2025). Daniel also contacted with or visited the facilities of major MRE companies – CorPower, OceanWinds, NREL and AW Energy - following on two INORE Symposium in 2023 (Portugal) and 2024 (Scotland); vi) Reviewer and Jury duty: over 40 reviews for reputed journals and conferences, including Elsevier’s Applied Energy and Ocean Engineering, MDPI’s Water and JMSE, ICE’s Maritime Engineering, Springer’s Nature Communications, JICZM and FEUP’s DCE. Project application reviewer for EU-funded AQUARIUS. Main arguer of two Environmental Engineering M.Sc. Thesis (2023 and 2024), and co-supervisor of two Capstone Project students (2024 and 2025) and a Ph.D. Civil Engineering student (ongoing); vii) Daniel helped establish six European projects: 2023 – e2PORTS (Interreg Atlantic Area) and HelioSea (CETPartnership); 2024 – AI.SEA.POWER, InnoWEC (FCT PeX) and SEACARE (FCT IC&TD); 2025 – Optimization of Wave Energy Farms using Artificial Intelligence (FCT PeX). Consultancy work for the IHRH - Praia das Pastoras (2018), PROTEVS (2019) and EuReComp (2025); viii) Daniel has participated in numerous U.Porto and CIIMAR activities, from teaching (BEST Course and Junior University) to exhibitions (CIIMAR Open Day and Mostra U.Porto). His work has been disseminated to the general public through in-person interviews (RTP's Biosfera) and social media/news (Lusa Agency and Offshore Energy Biz). Lastly, he is a member of CIIMAR's Scientific Committee, the European Marine Board’s ECOP, of APRH, an INOREan, and Vice-President of IAHR YPN Portugal.
