Scientific Council 2022-2026

The Scientific Council is one of the Faculty’s central management bodies and comprises 25 members:
  • the Dean, who presides;
  • the Vice-President of the Scientific Council;
  • 14 representatives of career path teaching and research staff;
  • 2 representatives of other full-time teaching and research staff who hold doctorates, holding contracts with a duration never inferior to one year;
  • 7 representatives of research units recognized and assessed according to legal regulations as at least very good, and which include career path teaching and research staff linked to FEUP, or other teaching and research staff who hold doctorates also liked to FEUP and holding contracts with a duration never inferior to one year.

The Scientific Council has the following powers and duties:

  • to draw up and approve regulations for its proper functioning;
  • to issue opinions on proposals for FEUP's strategic plans;
  • to review FEUP's plan for scientific activities;
  • to issue opinions on the creation, merging, transformation or termination of FEUP organizational subunits;
  • to issue opinions on the creation, merging, transformation and termination of FEUP research and development units;
  • to issue opinions on the conclusions drawn up by the Dean on evaluation reports of FEUP research units and on evaluation reports of those research units including FEUP teaching or research staff;
  • to deliberate on the distribution of work for the teaching staff, submitting it for the approval of the Dean of FEUP;
  • to issue opinions on the creation of cycles of study involving FEUP, and to approve the corresponding curricula;
  • to propose the awarding of titles or honorary distinctions;
  • to propose, and to issue opinions on, the creation of awards;
  • to propose, and to issue opinions on, FEUP's involvement in international agreements and partnerships;
  • to propose the members of juries for academic examinations and for the recruitment of academic staff;
  • to engage in other acts relating to the careers and recruitment of teaching and research staff;
  • to issue opinions on its own electoral regulations.
