Most of the 1st cycle lectures are given in Portuguese, while a number of 2nd Cycle (Masters) subjects are taught in English. On the faculty's website, by clicking on each subject you want to attend, relevant information will be displayed concerning lectures, language of instruction, subject programme, number of theoretical and practical classes, etc.
The teaching language is decided by the teacher of the subject and may vary from one academic year to another, so the best thing to do is check the information page of the subjects the student is interested in attending, as a reference, and always considering that for each academic year it may change. 

International students are advised to learn some Portuguese before coming to Porto (if possible), although we have no language prerequisite for undertaking studies at FEUP.

BUT PLEASE NOTE that if you wish to attend unit courses lectured in Portuguese you need to have prior formal knowledge of the language, otherwise you cannot propose and attend those unit courses! 

For mobility programs (e.g. ERASMUS), especially at graduate level, provision is made in some subjects for foreign students to be able to have orientation (contents and bibliography) in English and also do their reports and written examinations in English. However, this will have to be arranged with teachers on a case-by-case basis, with the exception of the subjects mentioned in the official list of subjects taught in English.

Portuguese for Foreigners (A1.1) - Intensive Course Faculty of Engineering of the UP

This four-week (more intensive) or six-week (less intensive) course is intended for foreign students and researchers with no previous knowledge of Portuguese who wish to gain basic knowledge of the language with an emphasis on oral skills. The course includes a short introduction to Portuguese everyday life and language, including basic grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and short writing exercises. The target-group for this level are those who are initiating the study of the language, whose mother tongue is not Spanish, Italian or Romanian.

Portuguese for Foreigners (A1.2) - Intensive Course at Faculty of Engineering of the UP

This course is intended for foreign students and researchers with knowledge of Portuguese equivalent to the Intensive Beginner’s Course — level A1.1. Students will improve their Portuguese language proficiency and broaden their knowledge of Portuguese society. They will also acquire deeper knowledge of important basic grammar as well as elementary working vocabulary. Breakthrough A1.2 - The target-group for this level are those who are initiating the study of the language, whose mother tongue is Spanish, Italian or Romanian.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

The Intensive Portuguese course for our foreign students is not a unit course, is an independent and complete course, so it is not included in the Learning Agreement. 
Students will be given a test at the end of the course to assess their knowledge. If students attend at least 75% of classes and get a positive mark in the last exam, they will get a certificate issued by FLUP at the end, granting them 6 ECTS credits. Please confirm with FLUP the cost of its issue.
