We face paradoxical questions of how to balance individual liberty with national security, personal autonomy with a free market economy, and the right to individual sovereignty with social order. Does a right to privacy mean simply restricting access to personal information or can we achieve a harmonious balance of social rules and values? Abstract: Big data has great potential social benefit while being perceived as a serious threat to individual privacy. Together with advanced technology big data facilitates pervasive surveillance and rapid distribution of information across the globe. The meanings of privacy and big data have been debated and often contested; therefore, we start by specifying the interpretations of key terms: Big Data and Privacy. Through advances in communications technology, people and things are becoming increasingly interconnected. This interconnectivity dramatically increases the amount of data that is collected and shared. Since small integrated circuits are becoming so inexpensive, we are able to add intelligence to almost everything. Big Data is a way of thinking about knowledge through data, knowledge that ultimately can support decision making. The outcome of these developments not only allows businesses to have more access to potential insight than ever before, but also is enhancing our lives in countless ways; providing information at the click of a button easing many facets of daily living. On the other hand, advocacy groups, legislators, scholars and media all object to these developments. They worry about the threat to individual privacy from Google Maps' street view, clickstreams by Internet service providers, tagging group photograph of others on one's Facebook Page, and police using license plate recognition systems at public intersections. As citizens in open democracies we must weigh the threats to our privacy against the potential service to society. ------------------ About the Author: Noushin Ashrafi is a professor of Management Information Systems at the University of Massachusetts-Boston (UMB) where she has served as the Chair of the Executive Committee of Faculty Council for six consecutive years, Associate Dean at the College Management, and currently is the Director of Graduate Certificates at the College of Advanced and Professional Studies.
