Master in Chemical Engineering

The Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering has been awarded the international EUR-ACE quality label. This certifies MIEQ as a high-quality programme which meets the international standards for professional engineering education at the masters level. [+ info]

The Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering (MIEQ), offered by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), is an academic degree which grants to the students 2nd cycle professional skills in the area of chemical engineering and related fields.

This training offer is almost entirely provided by the Department of Chemical Engineering and essentially corresponds to a reformulation and adaptation of its almost centenary degree in chemical engineering. This master's (MIEQ) gives students the opportunity to learn new skills and methodologies of work, which are in consonance with the evolution of teaching and learning practices in the best European institutions.

This academic degree acquaints students with underlying strong knowledge on Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Chemical Engineering Science. This master is based not only on the practice of engineering but also on design. Besides, students have the chance to deepen their knowledge in one of the following areas:

  • Processes and Products
  • Energy and Environment
  • Biotechnology

Academic degrees

Students who complete this degree will earn a diploma in Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering (Second Cycle); it corresponds to a degree that lasts 5 years (300 ETCS).

Students will finish the first cycle of this degree when they achieve 180 ECTS (so-called Undergraduate Programme in Sciences of Engineering - Chemical Engineering).

Study Plans

The courses of the first 3 years are the same to all students, being based on core chemical engineering fundamental knowledge (mathematics, physics, chemical reaction engineering, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, separation processes, etc.). The last 2 years offer a more specific training in one of the following 3 branches:

Processes and Product: training more related to traditional Chemical Engineering. This track gives special emphasis to design, project, development and optimization of the production of chemical products that are part of peoples’ everyday life.

Energy and Environment: since there has been a growing concern regarding the environment and scarcity of energy resources, this branch of specialization aims providing students with professional skills, which will make them able to apply the correct environmental and energy approaches. These approaches are based on the development of more clean technologies, minimization of the consumption of natural resources, energy optimization and use of renewable energies and raw materials.

Biotechnology: this branch allows students to complete their training in Chemical Engineering with specific skills in different domains of Biotechnology. This training is intended especially for the food, pharmaceutical and valorization of natural products industries.

Professional Skills

As far as professional skills are concerned, the main goal of the Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering is to prepare students and make them able to start a professional career in an industrial activity or research, with the highest standards of quality.

Students who complete this academic degree have to be prepared to work and assume professional positions as Chemical Engineers in its various areas of potential intervention, either in Portugal or abroad, namely in industrial companies, services companies, project/design offices, municipal services, governmental agencies, among many others.

Career Opportunities

Masters in Chemical Engineering have many career opportunities, namely in industry, research and technical-commercial activities, among others.

As far as career opportunities in industry are concerned, chemical engineers can act as a support to industrial operation, including monitoring and process control, as well as production managers, including operation programming and quality control, as well in terms of design and industrial innovation.
