Master in Engineering and Industrial Management

The Integrated Master in Industrial Engineering and Management has been awarded the international EUR-ACE quality label. This certifies MIEIG as a high-quality programme which meets the international standards for professional engineering education at the masters level. [+ info]

The objective of MIEGI is to educate professionals who combine the mastery of management techniques with a solid engineering background and an integrated knowledge of technological issues.

The first three years' study plan (leading to a graduate degree) is characterised by a solid training in Mathematics and Physics, to which is added an integrated knowledge of the areas of Design and Manufacturing, Fluids and Energy and Industrial Automation. Graduates also acquire comprehensive knowledge of the functioning of companies and the economy.

The objective of the last two years of the study plan (leading to the master's degree) is to combine basic engineering training with advanced training in the areas of Industrial Management.

Students may undertake academic mobility experiences during the course (4th and 5th year) under the Erasmus programme. Students also have the possibility to carry out exchanges with Universities in the USA, China and South America.

The course ends with an individual dissertation project, with the duration of one semester, which is normally carried out in a business environment (at a national or international level). There is also the possibility of carrying out an integrated dissertation in scientific research projects (at FEUP or its interface institutes, or at universities outside Portugal).

The development of creativity, communication skills, team leadership, entrepreneurship, innovative spirit and resilience are also central aspects of the training acquired at MIEGI.

Objectives

It is intended that graduates acquire a scientific and technological training that will allow them to have the versatility to adapt quickly to changes in society and respond to the challenges of organizations, learning new methods and skills, with a view to continuously improving the organizations where they are inserted, ensuring the sustainable development of the environment, in social and environmental terms.

The specific learning objectives that students are encouraged to develop include:

- To acquire and be able to use with the necessary proficiency knowledge of basic sciences, such as Mathematics and Physics, and of Engineering Sciences and Technologies, with special emphasis on the areas of Design and Manufacturing, Fluids and Energy and Industrial Automation.

- Acquire comprehensive knowledge in the area of quantitative methods (Operational Research, Statistics, Data Science) and Information Systems, especially seen as decision support tools.

- Acquire an integrated knowledge of business management, with emphasis on the areas of Operations Management (Quality, Maintenance, Production, Logistics, Industry Digitalization) and Business Management (Strategy, Marketing, Financial Management, Management Control, Human Resources, Business Law, Innovation and Entrepreneurship).

- Developing personal attitudes leading to a successful professional activity and a relevant intervention in society, including an attitude of change agent, creativity, effective communication skills, group work, valuing continuous training, leadership skills of multidisciplinary teams, ability to assess situations, discuss ideas, listen to others and make decisions.

- Develop an attitude of responsible citizenship, with social and environmental concerns aligned with sustainable development.

Employment Prospects

Graduates are expected to be able to support decision-making in organizations, being active agents of change and innovation.

It is intended that graduates will initially perform management support functions in preparing decisions in various functional areas, including production management, logistics, asset management, quality management, information systems, process modelling, financial analysis, management control, strategy or marketing. Those who demonstrate leadership skills can reach management positions or start their own businesses.
