Doctoral Program in Advanced Materials and Processing

The Doctoral Program in Advanced Materials and Processing - PDMPA (also known as AdvaMTech) is a National Doctoral Program that involves seven Public Universities and fourteen Research Units. The Program was instituted by the Universities of Aveiro, Beira Interior, Coimbra, Lisboa, Minho, Nova de Lisboa, and Porto, which confer the degree of Doctor in Advanced Materials and Processing.

The Doctoral Program is a highly interdisciplinary study cycle, built on the competence and experience of the research institutions and academic departments involved. The Program covers the scientific area of materials and their processing. This area is associated with most technological innovations and has been identified by the European Commission as one of the five key development technologies.

Each doctoral student has a personalized study plan that allows, and encourages, courses at any of the partner universities. All students participate in a "Materials Engineering Seminar" course, in which they have mandatory periods of stay at the seven universities involved. The thesis themes are always co-supervised by professors from two institutions, with experimental work conducted at both institutions.

Objectives

PDMPA (AdvaMTech) is in-line with the objectives defined in the HORIZON 2020 European program that considers Advanced Materials as one of the six relevant Key Enabling Technologies. The main strategic goal is to contribute to the development of a qualified, globally engaged, and diverse professional workforce, tuned with European expectations, that will benefit government agencies, industries, and academia. Students must be open to, prepared for, and competitive in today’s global economy and global health environment. Through this program, they will learn not only through coursework but also through directly participating in collaborative research between institutions involved, running European projects and networks, industry-oriented projects as well as in elements as intellectual property, government regulation and industry standards, entrepreneurship.
