Post-Doc Researchers in the Chemical Department

After post-doctoral research experience in the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), we felt that we needed to go further in our training as scientists. We bet on coming to FEUP due to the excellence of the work done in the area of the mechanics of complex fluids and microfluidics in the Centre for Transport Phenomena Studies (CEFT). From the beginning our colleagues helped us to fit in and supported us in everything, including getting post-doctoral grants provided by the Portuguese government through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). On the personal level, we adapted easily to life in Oporto and felt ourselves at home, seeing that both the culture and the lifestyle are very similar to those in Spain. Apart from this, we really like the city, to the point where we consider it one of the most enchanting in Europe.

Post-Doc Mobility in the Mechanical Department

The Mechanical Department of FEUP (DEMec) is very well-known in the scientific community. My first contact with FEUP was with Prof. Camanho. I met him twice at international conferences; we work in the same field and so I was very interested in his work. We also had inspiring discussions about current research topics. Therefore, it was a small step towards choosing FEUP for my sabbatical. I am not part of any mobility programme, but I did get a scholarship from DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).

The Mechanical Department made sure I was very well integrated as soon as I started work here. Students and researchers are very kind and open-minded. I must say that, in general, and particularly at FEUP, the Portuguese speak English very well and, much more importantly, they don’t mind if you talk in English to them.

FEUP is very well equipped, regarding not only testing machines and laboratories, but also computer technology. I can use the computer cluster which provides me all the software and programming tools I need for numerical simulations. What’s more, I really appreciate the chance to exchange experiences and discuss issues with other young researchers. It really is an inspiring atmosphere and, although I’m still at the beginning of my sabbatical, I’m convinced it will be very successful, and it will help me to develop my own research work.
