Masters - MsC- and Undergraduate Programmes

Neli Paula Tomé, Master in Mechanical Engineering

Mozambique, 5th Year Student

FEUP was the first option for my studies since, according to the statistics, it is one of the best engineering faculties in Europe.

I was very well integrated into this institution with the support of FEUP’s Integration and Orientation Unit, as well as the support of all teachers and colleagues who allowed me to develop here, both personally and academically.

In addition to the high quality teaching and the knowledge acquisition, I would also like to highlight the quality of FEUP’s infra-structures, the easy access to the equipment and, above all, the willingness of the teaching staff to readily answer any questions at all times. I would also like to emphasize the importance of studying in a multi-cultural environment and the way each student keeps its own roots. I am sure that being a student here at FEUP will guarantee my professional success, and I advise all Mozambican students to study at FEUP.

Sopiko Begashvili, Master in Spatial Planning and Urban Project

Georgia, Tbilisi

From the very beginning I found it interesting to follow the Master in Spatial Planning and Urban Project at FEUP.

First of all, living and studying abroad is a great experience which every student should go through. It gives you the opportunity to meet new interesting people from all over the world, learn their culture and make new friends from different continents and countries. Portugal by itself is a very special country, with kind and helpful people and plenty of great places to visit.

This master course contains subjects that are helping me to explore divergent fields and working skills. I found myself very lucky to have the chance to meet and work with professors from different fields of knowledge and experience, who are always happy to help you and work with you. Besides, thanks to my Portuguese colleagues, I’m improving my Portuguese language skills. After all, I'm very glad that I chose to study at FEUP, and I recommend to every student to come to this institution and amazing city of Porto.

Nabila As'ad, Master in Services Engineering and Management

Indonesia

I have a bachelor in Informatics Engineering yet I have a profound interest in the field of services design. I see this field as a multidisciplinary study. There isn’t any study programme offered in Indonesia related with services design, so MESG attracted me and now I see the opportunity to introduce this field of study in Indonesia. The fact that I had always been curious about Portugal also helped in the decision to choose to study at FEUP.

When I came I think MESG wasn’t fully prepared for International students. I didn’t really feel the integration happened maybe because I was in Master’s study not the undergraduate study where I saw many student orientation programmes (with those seniors wearing traje).I got several obligatory classes taught in Portuguese and it was hard for me to follow the classes, anyhow the quality of the professors teaching in MESG is very good. I appreciate the networking and collaboration projects between MESG, companies, and other universities (both Portuguese universities or foreign universities).

At FEUP I got the opportunity to discuss about services design with skillful professors in the field. I would also like to point the good facilities that this faculty have such as the library and its books, the trainings, job fairs, as well as the supportive and good for studying academic environment.

The advantage of studying abroad is that you learn more than just studying: you become more open to overcome the cultural barriers and you enlarge your network. To help me with all the expenses I applied to an Erasmus Mundus LOTUS II scholarship funded by European Union.

I would for sure recommend FEUP for a period of studies!

Fernando Pedrosa, Alumnus working in CERN

Licenciatura in Mechanical Engineering

As an ERASMUS student just back to FEUP for the last semester of my mechanical engineering degree, I received an email from the career service of the Faculty about the ADI program at CERN. This was an opportunity that I didn’t want to let escape. I applied and now, after two years as ADI and three years as CERN Fellow, here I am with a staff contract at CERN and responsible for all the safety aspects of the ALICE experiment. Thanks to FEUP’s career service, today I perform a very interesting and challenging task in one of the biggest research institutes in the world.

My training at FEUP allowed me to be here today, as well trained as engineers coming from the most prestigious universities all over the world, like MIT or Oxford. The community of FEUP alumni working at CERN confirms the quality of the training provided and the hard work mentality developed during the engineering degree.

Ingrid Barroso, Master in Services Engineering and Management

Brazil, 1st year Student - Background in Electrical Engineering

When I finished my Electrical Engineering course at the Federal University of São João del Rei in Brazil, one of my teachers sent me details of the MESG programme, together with information on FEUP, saying that it would fit my profile. Later on, I searched on the Internet for more information about the institution, and I noticed that there were many references to FEUP being a highly reputable institution that was recognised worldwide.

At the time, I was working for a major company, so coming to Portugal to do a master’s programme was an important decision. The market wasn’t in a very good phase due to the economic crisis, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to invest in my education.

I was very well received by all the FEUP community – my classmates, teachers, and the employees of FEUP, who helped me with all the documentation and registration procedures. Strangely enough, my greatest difficulty was the Portuguese, but after several weeks of questions and lots of practice, I overcame the differences.

FEUP is a well-prepared institution which provides the infrastructure and materials needed in order to facilitate learning and carry out projects.

When classes began, I started looking for the promoted activities and for more information about the Students Association. I love sports, so I joined the women’s volleyball team, and began attending classes of Brazilian percussion, offered by the FEUP Students Association. There are always lots of congresses, fairs and other events taking place at FEUP, and that helps us to learn more about employment opportunities, and to meet important people for our network.

I believe that, after finishing the MESG at FEUP, I’ll be a better professional and more prepared for the job market. With the help of qualified and well-prepared teachers, I learn a little more in each class and with each paper. If someone asked me if I would recommend FEUP, the answer would surely be a YES. I have learned a lot here and I still have more to learn, either with the institution, teachers, fellow students, or simply with the other students we meet in the hallways.

Ricardo Gonçalves, Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering

5th Year Student

I was in the fourth year of my Master’s and I really wanted to start to apply my academic knowledge. There was nothing better than to apply it in a volunteer association tailored to suit qualified people, which enabled me to participate directly in development projects in Portugal and Mozambique. I offered to work for EpDAH – Engineering for Development and Humanitarian Assistance, whose nucleus in Oporto functions in FEUP.

I joined a team and by the end of my fourth year I had helped to hand over an engineering project, made very good friends, and, above all, I had contributed to the building of a girl’s boarding school that was going to help forty disadvantaged children.

In fact, there’s nothing more gratifying than applying the knowledge we have in favour of the good of others, while, at the same time, increasing our professional experience and personal satisfaction.

Miao Sun (孙淼), Master in Informatics Engineering and Computing

China, 3th Year Student

I came to Portugal because of my family. When I arrived in the country, I felt quite lost due to the big cultural and language differences. After an adaptation period, I decided to continue with my studies. In China, I had already been enrolled to university for a year. In Portugal, FEUP was right away my first option, since it’s the best engineering faculty in the country.

When I entered FEUP, I came across a very difficult situation: the language. I could barely understand the classes. It was very complicated in the beginning, but luckily I have good friends who helped me a lot throughout that period and who are still helping me now.

I appreciate all the good infra-structures and equipment that FEUP has to offer. The teaching quality and the e-learning platform are also quite good. The only flaw that I find here in FEUP is the fact that there are no classes in English: my master’s course, for example, uses a lot of materials and terminology in English, so I think it should be mandatory to have classes in English.

In my opinion, the advantage of studying abroad lies in the contact with a new culture, in the exchange of knowledge and in the acquisition of new experiences.

On my first day at FEUP, I was caught by the students “in black” that took me to “Praxe”. I had no idea what it was about. I thought that their habits were very strange and I didn’t understand the goal of all those “games”. A few months later, I started to understand the true meaning of “Praxe”: “teaching and learning, union and endurance, friendship and brotherhood”. I’ve made many friends in “Praxe”: they are always there for me and they make my student life in Porto much richer. I love the academic outfit, it is really cool!

Paraskevi Dimakopoulou, Master in Multimedia

Greece, 1st Year Student

I first came to Porto for three months with the “Leonardo da Vinci”, a program for students that finished their first degree. I really enjoyed the city of Porto and i wanted to have the experience of studying and living abroad. I was searching to do a Master Programme and found the Master in Multimedia at FEUP. As I finished “Computer engineering & Informatics” in Greece, this Master was ideal for me to continue my studies.

As a matter of personal development, it is very important to continue education throughout life, especially in the technological field. Of course the acquisition of one or more diplomas has an added value in one's curriculum and helps to focus and specialize in a specific area.

One of the reasons why I chose this Master is that there’s a large variety of subjects to choose from. Another advantage is that people from different areas gather and work together exchanging opinions. Last but not least, a lot of seminars take place at FEUP which is really helpful in guiding the students in their future academic or professional career.

The professors are very kind and helpful, especially for students like me, who are not totally familiar with the Portuguese language. FEUP buildings are very new and the library is a very nice place to study in.

I would totally recommend other students who are a little familiar with the Portuguese language to do this Master in Multimedia.
