Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Acronym: DEMM Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering - Opens a new window
Head: Manuel Vieira
Description: SCOPE

Materials Science and Materials Engineer are exciting, stimulating and dynamic areas of study.
The phenomenological and mechanistic relationships between the material processing parameters, the microstructure generated and the macroscopic properties of solids are, in essence, what the Materials Science is all about. This is best represented by the "Materials Science triangle": synthesis-microstructure-properties.
Materials Engineering, on the other hand, is concerned with the design, production, and testing of engineering materials. Such materials must fulfill simultaneously the dimensional properties, quality control, environmental and economic requirements.
Interests within the Department almost span the entire materials cycle from mining and refining of raw materials, to production and utilization of finished materials, and finally to disposal and recycling. There is a variety of problems of vital importance to the development of the science of metals, polymers, ceramics, glasses, electronic materials, biomedical materials, composites, and other materials awaiting solution.
The Department takes materials research forward into the new century with a rapidly growing commitment to the field of biomedical and nano materials, in parallel with the historically activities in the development of new metallic materials and processes. Both computational modeling of materials and process technology have evolved remarkably in recent years.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering aims to provide high skill Metallurgical and Materials Engineers and Scientists, to meet the needs of industry, academia and government, through:

  • educational programs that cultivate excellence;
  • nnovative research that advances basic and applied knowledge in materials;
  • effective interactions with the external community through educational outreach, industrial collaborations, and service activities.
Contact with industry plays an important part through visits to industrial facilities, speakers from industry, vacation placements, and attribution of Merit Awards to students.
