Summary: EnergySwitch aims to overcome the main factor hindering the commercialization of magnetic refrigerators (MRs) by simulating, optimizing and fabricating the first MR device based on thermal switches (TSs). Magnetic refrigeration is an environmentally
safe, compact and reliable technology offering efficiencies 100% larger than those of conventional expansion-compression technologies. Once operational, MR will offer zero global warming and ozone depletion potentials. The present project aims to pave the way for the growth of an emerging technology that can boost energy savings. Numerical
simulations will be first developed to provide the paths towards the fabrication of the envisaged device. On TSs, three approaches will be followed: optimized magnetic nanoparticles ensembles, materials whose thermal conductivity (k) is expected to change with the magnetic field and bulk memristors. After the optimization of the
proposed set of TSs we will assemble a MR based on optimized materials.
