The Master’s in Education organised by the FCUP are second cycle, professional degrees qualifying students to teach in primary and secondary schools. This degree provides the scientific and pedagogical skills required to teach mathematics in the 3rd cycle of primary and in secondary education. It harmonises the educational process with the need for teacher qualifications arising from changes in society and education and the evolution of science and technology. The degree guarantees careful instruction in both general and specific areas of knowledge and know-how required for quality professional training whilst it also prepares practitioners to face the novel demands of education.

Admissions Requirements

  1. Holders of a first cycle degree (bachelor's degree, or in the conditions referred to in paragraphs b) to d) of article 17 of DL65/2018), without professional qualification for teaching in the recruitment group of Mathematics (Group 500) and who have obtained in their higher education at least 120 credits in Mathematics.
  2. Those who, while complying with the other requirements, have only obtained 75% of the minimum number of credits stated above in Mathematics may also apply. In this case, they must obtain, through supplementary training, the missing credits to cover the minimums after admission but prior to enrolment in units of specific didactics and initiation to professional practice.
  3. Prior evaluation, in specific tests for this purpose, of the oral and written command of the Portuguese language and proficiency in the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation is compulsory. Candidates may choose to use the grade of an identical test taken in FCUP in the previous academic year.
  4. Candidates who have not completed their degree before the deadline for applications, but are able to meet the requirements for access up to the date of registration, will also be accepted for seriation. In these cases, candidates must provide documentary evidence of their curricular average at that time and the curricular units they need to take to conclude their degree.

Note: All candidates who do not certify that they have completed the degree (or equivalent) and do not meet the requirements defined in the preceding paragraphs until the end of the enrolment period will be excluded.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

  1. 50% Average of the Bachelor's Degree For candidates who do not hold a bachelor's degree at the date of application but are able to complete it by the date of enrolment in the cycle of studies, and who meet the admission requirements in paragraph a), the bachelor's degree average is affected by a factor equal to the ratio between the ECTS in which they have already been approved and the total number of ECTS of the bachelor's degree.
  2. 25%: CV
  3. 25%: Grade obtained in the test of oral and written knowledge of the Portuguese language and proficiency in the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation

Candidate tiebreaker criteria:

  1. Hold a master's degree in the field of Mathematics, or related fields.
  2. Grade obtained in the test of oral and written knowledge of the Portuguese language and of proficiency in the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation
  3. Interview, if necessary.
