Master in Forensic Genetics

Objectives

This cycle of studies provides advanced training in the science and laboratory and computer skills necessary for anyone interested in understanding the potential and limitations of forensic genetic analysis.
It also imparts the technical and scientific abilities needed to work in institutions in this field (such as Forensic Medical Institutes and forensic science). Potential students will be recruited from candidates who perform genetic forensic analysis and other professionals in the field.

Admissions Requirements

Holders of a degree in Biology or related areas;
Holders of a foreign higher education degree in Biology or related fields;
Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the Scientific Committee of the Course recognizes as sufficient to certify the ability to undertake this cycle of studies. For applicants not holding the degree at the date of application but able to complete it by the date of enrollment in the study cycle, evidence should be provided on the average of the grades at the date of application as well as of the missing curricular units required to obtain the Bachelor's degree. Other graduates may also be admitted, provided that their curriculum demonstrates adequate basic scientific background;

Note: All applicants who do not prove completion of degree by the end of the registration period will be excluded.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

The ranking will be done according to the following criteria and sub-criteria:

  1. Standardized grade of the degree (50%)

    The adjusted grade is obtained by normalising the grade to the 0-20 scale, adding the value of ln(R/r), and rounding to the nearest integer in the 0-20 scale, with ln expressing the natural logarithm and R and r being, respectively for the University of Porto and the university issuing the degree, the positions in the world ranking published in http://www.webometrics.info

  2. Curriculum (30%)
    • Subcriterion 1: Technical/scientific background (30%)
    • Subcriterion 2: Relevant professional experience (30%)
    • Subcriterion 3: Technical/scientific publications/communications (40%)
  3. Affinity of previous education and training with MSc aims (20%)
    • Subcriterion 1: Technical/scientific competences in Genetics (30%)
    • Subcriterion 2: Relevant professional experience (30%)

Criteria for breaking ties:
Number of credits obtained in the area of Genetics.
