Doctoral Program in Computer Science

The Doctor's degree program in Computer Science aims to promote excellence in advanced studies in Computer Science,training professionals able to develop and apply their scientific knowledge in areas that lie at the forefront of Computer Science. Former students that graduated from this Doctoral Program have been making their careers, both in academia and companies,national as well as international. The teaching staff, mainly members of the Department of Computer Science FCUP, is highly qualified and associated with active research centers, publishing and regularly and with impact. Teachers collaborate on national and international projects.

Admissions Requirements

To enter the PhD program, candidates must satisfy the conditions in Article 30 of Decree Law nr. 74/2006, as well as the conditions in Article 5 of the General Regulation of Third Cycles of Study of the University of Porto:

  1. Holders of a Master's degree or legal equivalent;
  2. Holders of a Bachelor's degree, with an academic or scientific curriculum, that is recognized as indicative of the capacity to carry out this study program;
  3. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, that is recognized as indicative of the capacity to carry out this study program.

Applicants must also have a good knowledge, spoken and written, of English.

Selection and Ranking Criteria

  • Curriculum vitae (50%)
  • Workplan (25%)
  • Academic curriculum in the area of Computer Science (15%)
  • Support letter from the supervisor (10%)

Tie-break criterion:
  • Interview (optional): if there is a draw between candidates, there may be an interview.


Teaching Language

  • In Portuguese and partially in English
