In 2011, the Nobel Foundation has awarded one half of the Nobel Prize of Physics to Saul Perlmutter and the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess "for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae".
This discovery, which equals in importance the discovery of the expansion of the Universe by Edwin Hubble in 1929 and of the cosmic microwave background radiation by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965, is the culmination of about a century of intensive research in cosmology.
The observational and theoretical aspects of this discovery and its implications will be discussed and put into the context of the early XXI century physics.
